Despite the beginning of a new generation of consoles, stock shortages, and the obstacles created by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year has been a continuation of major sales success for Nintendo‘s Switch console that has been going since it launched more than 3 years ago. And it’s still showing no signs of ending anytime soon.
It has now been a year since the Nintendo Switch made its official debut in China, with Tencent assisting with distribution of the console, although it has been unofficially available in the country earlier than that. According to market tracker Niko Partners, more than 1,300,000 units have been sold in the region.
This is almost double the amount of sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the same period, and it means that lifetime Switch sales are at nearly 4,000,000 units. Niko Partners says that this has been done “through both legal and gray market channels”. It is unknown how many were specifically sold through Tencent’s efforts, as Nintendo declined to comment to Bloomberg about the matter.
